Early MMA Career
Paul Kelly made his professional mixed martial arts debut on October 15, 2005 defeating Nigel Whitear via TKO in under a minute of the first round.
Kelly spent the first six fights of his career fighting for British based MMA promotions, going undefeated and finishing all of his fights by either TKO or submission.
On his UFC.com profile page, Kelly mentions that he was on the shortlist to appear on TUF 3 as a middleweight competitor but didn't make the cut.
UFC Career
Kelly made his UFC debut at UFC 80 against fellow Brit, Paul Taylor.
The fight got off to a blistering start with fast and wild punching and kicking exchanges from the moment the two met in the middle of the octagon. As the fight wore on, Kelly found success with takedown attempts and ground control and eventually worked his way to a unanimous decision victory. The fight earned both he and Taylor, "Fight of the Night" honors.
Kelly was scheduled to face off against Jonathan Goulet at UFC 85 but had to pull out due to injury. Instead, Kelly made his return at UFC 89, against TUF 2 veteran, Marcus Davis. Kelly never really got started in the fight as he looked tentative on his feet before shooting for a takedown in the second round. Davis latched onto a guillotine choke shortly thereafter, forcing Kelly to tap and endure his first professional loss.
