Early MMA Career
Luke Cummo made his professional mixed martial arts debut at the inaugural Ring of Combat show on October 12, 2002. He faced and defeated Kadir Kadri via TKO at 2:37 of round 1.
In August of 2003, Cummo faced David Tirelli at Ring of Combat 3, where he improved his record to 2-0 with another TKO victory.
Cummo's first professional defeat came in an immediate rematch with Tirelli at Ring of Combat 4, two months later where he went down via unanimous decision.
Cummo bounced back from the loss in December of 2003, as he scored a triangle choke submission victory over Mike Thatcher at Ring of Combat 5.
In April of 2004, he dropped a unanimous decision to a raw Josh Koscheck at Ring of Combat 6.
The Ultimate Fighter
In early 2005, Cummo was brought in as a contestant for the second season of the UFC produced MMA reality show, The Ultimate Fighter. TUF 2 consisted of 8 welterweight fighters and 8 heavyweight fighters, with the winners of the two 8-man tournaments earning themselves a six figure UFC contract.
Cummo was picked last by the coaches due to his unassuming looks but ended up surprising them with his work ethic and dedication to nutrition.
In Episode 8, Cummo defeated Anthony Torres via unanimous decision and moved into the semi final stage.
In the final four, Cummo faced Sam Morgan who he knocked out with a knee in the second round to book a place in the final against Joe Stevenson.
At The Ultimate Fighter 2 Finale, Cummo was beaten by Stevenson via unanimous decision in a thoroughly entertaining fight.
UFC Career
In his first fight out from under TUF 2's banner, Cummo faced fellow TUF 2 competitor, Jason Von Flue at UFC Fight Night 4 in April of 2006. After three rounds, Cummo was awarded the unanimous decision victory.
A little over two months later, Cummo returned to UFC action at UFC Fight Night 5. He faced Canadian, Jonathan Goulet in an entertaining fight that saw both fighters experience near defeat continously for three full rounds. At the end of the third, Goulet was awarded the unanimous decision.
With a level record of 4-4, Cummo was matched up against TUF 3 light heavyweight runner-up, Josh Haynes in a welterweight bout at UFC 69 in April of 2007. In the second round, Cummo landed a devastating punch that knocked Haynes cold.
Five months later, Cummo picked up another UFC victory when he defeated the always perplexing, Edilberto de Oliveura via TKO in 1:45 of the first round at UFC Fight Night 11.
In March of 2008, Cummo's little run was ended when he was continously taken down by Luigi Fioravanti at UFC 82 en route to a lop sided unanimous decision loss.
In August of 2008, at UFC 87, Cummo faced Tamdan McCrory in a bout affectionately dubbed as a "Nerd Fight". A visibly stronger McCrory dominated the bout with ground control and submission attempts before finally being awarded the unanimous decision victory.
