Profile

Luis "Banha" Arthur Cane (born October 10, 1977) is a Brazilian professional mixed martial artist.

He stands 6 ft 2in (188cm) and currently fights as a light heavyweight (205 lbs.).

He fights out of the Gibi Thai fight team and fights as a light heavyweight for the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

His nickname, "Banha" roughly translates to "fat" in Portugese.

Early MMA Career

Luis Cane made his professional mixed martial arts debut on November 5, 2005, fighting for the Campeonato Brasileiro de Vale-Tudo organisation. His fought to a no contest with his opponent, Marcelo Alfaia.

Cane's next six fights were all fought within Brazilian promotions. He went 6-0 in those fights, finishing all his opponents with either strikes or submission. He made his American mixed martial arts debut at the Art Of War promotion's third show. He defeated James Damien Stelly via knockout due to a knee strike, 2.30 into round 1.

UFC Career

Cane's impressive, undefeated start to his career earned him a call-up to the premier mixed martial arts organisation, the UFC.

He made his UFC debut at UFC 79 against James Irvin. The fight had the makings of a thrilling contest early on but it ended rather anti-climactically with Cane kneeing Irvin in the eye while Irvin was technically on the ground. Irvin was dazed and unable to continue which resulted in Irvin being awarded the disqualification victory and Cane receiving his first professional loss. Cane was reported to have said after the fight that he believed Irvin was capable of continuing and that he was just looking for a way out.

Cane's second UFC appearance proved to be much more successful as he destroyed UFC gatekeeper, Jason Lambert via TKO 2.07 into the first round at UFC 85. Cane dropped Lambert a number of times in the short-lived bout before the fight was mercifully waved off.

Cane impressed even more so four months later, at UFC 89 against PRIDE standout, Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou. Cane weathered an early Sokoudjou storm before landing the "Knockout of the Night" with a stiff left hand followed by unanswered follow up punches on the ground.

At UFC 97, Cane was given main card duties again when he was matched up against the last ever WEC light heavyweight champion, Steve Cantwell. The two duked it out at a tepid pace for the full fifteen minutes, with Cane taking the advantage clearly in two out of three rounds. The judges returned a unanimous decision in his favor, giving him his third straight UFC victory.
