Judo and Hayastan Grappling

Armenian-born Karapet "Karo" Parisyan (born August 28, 1982) began Judo training at age nine. His instructors included two legendary figures in the Judo world: Gokor Chivichyan and Gene LeBell. As Karo matured his mentors began training him in their blended street fighting style, known as Hayastan Grappling System. Hayastan is a mixture of Judo, Sambo, submission wrestling, Greco-Roman wrestling, and Muay Thai. Karo continued his training at the Hayastan Academy through most of 2005.

While under the tutelage of Chivichyan and LeBell, Karo proved his mettle in Judo, winning tournament after tournament. Over time, Parisyan would win the Junior National Championship on six occasions. He later competed in Olympic Judo trials preceding the 2004 games.

MMA Career

On February 1, 1999 Karo Parisyan made his professional MMA debut. Fighting twice in a single night, Parisyan, who would soon be dubbed "The Heat" because of his aggressive style, scored submission victories over both of his opponents. And so began a streak of first round submission wins that would eventually reach six in-a-row.

Parisyan's first and second losses came at the hands of renowned fighter Sean Sherk. Karo rebounded from the defeats winning his next three fights. "The Heat" was then invited to compete in the Ultimate Fighting Championship, where he beat Dave Strasser by Kimura at 3:52 in the first round.

Unfortunately for Parisyan, the next man he faced in the Octagon was none other than Georges St. Pierre, to whom Karo lost a unanimous decision at UFC 46. Once again "The Heat" would make a comeback, racking up notable wins over Nick Diaz, Matt Serra, and Nick "The Goat" Thompson, among others.

Following his success against the highly-ranked Serra, Karo was considered the top contender for the UFC Welterweight crown. Sadly, Parisyan had to pull out of a title fight against champion Matt Hughes, due to knee injury.

His next bid the title was halted by Diego Sanchez when Sanchez won the 2006 Fight of the year, beating "The Heat" with a unanimous decision. Since then Karo has continued to show his ability to compete at the highest level, falling only to truly elite competition. As he did when he lost his most recent fight to Thiago Alves. Parisyan is currently scheduled to face fellow Judoka turned Mixed Martial Arts practitioner, Yoshiyuki Yoshida, on September, 6, 2008.
