Background and Early Career
Fabricio "Vai Cavalo" Werdum (born July 30, 1977) has an impressive resume. The two-time Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world champion holds a Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and a Brown Belt in Judo. He is also the 2007 ADCC world heavyweight champion and a former European Jiu-Jitsu champion.
Werdum's career as a professional mixed martial artist began on June 16, 2002 with a Triangle Choke victory over Tengiz Tedoradze. The next year Fabricio was invited to the Palace of Congress in Marrakesh to compete in World Absolute Fight 2. There he defeated Kristof Midoux, earning his second victory via Triangle Choke.
Werdum's next fight, which took place at Jungle Fight 1, resulted in a TKO win over Gabriel Gonzaga - Gonzaga's first loss. "Vai Cavalo" returned for Jungle Fight 2, knocking out Ebenezer Fontes Braga in the second round of their contest.
PRIDE
Undefeated, and with every win coming by submission or knockout, Fabricio Werdum made his way to Japan, and the PRIDE Fighting Championships. Once there, his first opponent was Tom Erikson, against whom he scored a submission. Werdum followed up in his next match with a Triangle Armbar victory over Roman Zentsov.
Fabricio's win streak finally came to an end at PRIDE 30 when he fought veteran Sergei Kharitonov, the loss was by split decision. Going to decision again, this time against Jon Olav Einemo, Werdum came away with the win. And in his next bout he caught Alistair Overeem in a Kimura, forcing "The Demolition Man" to tap. A unanimous decision loss to top five rated Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira ended Werdum's run in PRIDE, with the promotion disbanding a few months later.
UFC
After beating Aleksander Emelianenko with an impressive choke in a 2H2H promoted showdown, Werdum signed an exclusive deal with the Ultimate Fighting Championship. On April, 21, 2007, "Vai Cavalo" made his first U.S. appearance, dropping a decision to Andrei Arlovski.
A rematch with Gabriel Gonzaga echoed the first such contest, also resulting in a TKO win for Werdum. His most recent fight ended with another TKO, beating Brandon Vera at UFC 85 - Bedlam. Werdum's next opponent is Junior Dos Santos, with a the bout to take place on Saturday, October 25th, 2008.
