Profile

Bobby Southworth (born December 16, 1969) is an American professional mixed martial artist who trains out of the American Kickboxing Academy.

He stands 6 ft 2in (188cm) and commonly weighs approximately 205lbs (84kg).

He is a veteran from The Ultimate Fighter Season 1 and is the current Strikeforce light heavyweight champion.

Early MMA Career

Bobby Southworth made his professional MMA debut on May 28, 1999, fighting for the Neutral Grounds organization. He suffered a defeat via choke submission to Jason Godsey.

Southworth scored three consecutive victories after his unsuccessful debut, defeating all three opponents in the first round. The stretch of victories earned Southworth an invitation to the Japanese MMA promotion, PRIDE Fighting Championships.

At PRIDE 13, Southworth faced off against the more experienced, Vitor Belfort. Southworth was defeated by Belfort via rear naked choke at 4.09 of round 1.

After the Belfort loss, Southworth went 3-1 in various smaller promotions before being selected for the cast of The Ultimate Fighter Season 1.

The Ultimate Fighter

Southworth was considered by many to be the pre-tournament favourite for TUF 1.

In the first fight in TUF history, Southworth defeated Lodune Sincaid via KO in the second round. Southworth showed up out of shape for the show and had a giant struggle to make weight for the fight.

Southworth was picked to fight again before the semi-finals, this time against Stephan Bonnar. In a quality fight, Bonnar pulled out a controversial split decision after two rounds in a fight that probably should have gone to a third round.

Southworth was brought back for The Ultimate Fighter 1 Finale where he faced off against nemesis from the show, Sam Hoger. Surprisingly, Southworth was defeated by Hoger via unanimous decision.

Strikeforce

After Southworth's services were not retained by the UFC, Southworth took a year off from fighting before signing with the California based, Strikeforce promotion.

In his first fight for the organization, Southworth faced off against James Irvin in a bizarre fight that ended after 17 seconds due to both fighters falling out of the cage. Irvin was too hurt to continue and the fight was ruled a no contest.

In his next fight for Strikeforce, Southworth was given the oppurtunity to fight for the vacant light heavyweight belt against Vernon White. Southworth defeated White via unanimous decision after five rounds.

Southworth fought in two non-title bouts after his win over White. He defeated Bill Mahood via submission (injury) at the first Strikeforce Playboy Mansion show. Southworth suffered a defeat to Anthony Ruiz in his next fight, two months later.

In a rematch, this time for the Strikeforce light heavyweight title, Southworth defeated Anthony Ruiz via a very lacklustre unanimous decision after five rounds to retain the title.

Southworth was recently meant to defend his light heavyweight title against former UFC title challenger, Renato Sobral but had to pull out of the fight due to injury. The fight eventually did happen however, on November 21, 2008. Sobral defeated Southworth by TKO (cut) in the break between rounds one and two, and Southworth lost the light-heavyweight championship.
