MMA Career

Trained in Sambo since elementary school, Aleksander Emelianenko made his professional debut on October 5, 2003, winning a split decision over veteran Assueiro Silva at Pride Bushido 1. Continuing to find success in Japan, Aleks accumulated a 3-0 record before tasting defeat for the first time. Moving up from the Bushido division of the promotion, Aleksander "The Grim Reaper" Emelianenko was pit against juggernaut Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic. The result was a devastating knockout loss for the younger Emelianenko.

Undeterred, "The Grim Reaper" staged a comeback stringing together five wins, including three by KO. Then on May, 5, 2006 Emelianenko took another step up in competition, facing, and being submitted by Josh Barnett. Aleksander then attempted to create a second win streak, but it was not to be. Following a TKO against Sergei Kharitonov, Aleks was caught in a choke by the highly-regarded Fabricio Werdum, and forced to tap.

Since the loss to Werdum, "The Grim Reaper" has been unstoppable. Aleksander is currently on a five fight tear, with all of his wins coming via first round stoppage.

Special Bonus Section: The Tattoos!

Here is a semi-random collection of semi-truthful "facts" about Aleksander's impressive collective of body art:

  • The Tribal design which adorns Aleks' stomach is covering a name, possibly "Marina". Marina is the name of Aleksander's sister, as well as his wife, they are not the same person.
  • The Stars on Aleks' knees denote that he will never be brought to his knees. The stars on his shoulders however, are a symbol that he is a career criminal. Which probably also means he will never be brought to his knees.
  • His Pirate tattoo commemorates his participation in an armed robbery.
  • The Grim Reaper on Emelianenko's back is really just a Grim Reaper, must you read into everything? Oh yeah, it's holding a baby. No big deal.
  • The five-domed cathedral on Aleks' shoulder recounts the five-year term to which he was sentenced following a conviction for armed robbery. He was released early, serving only three and a half years.
  • The half beast head half skull on Alek's arm means "Man is a wolf to his fellow man", a saying similar to "dog eat dog".
