Profile
Xavier "Professor X" Foupa-Pokam (born July 3, 1982) is a French professional mixed martial artist fighting out of Paris, France.
He stands 6 ft. 1 in. (186 cm) tall and fights in the middleweight division (185 lbs.).
Professor X is a veteran of the Cage Rage promotion and currently fights as a middleweight for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
Early Career
Xavier Foupa-Pokam made his professional mixed martial arts debut for the World Absolute Fight promotion on June 15, 2002. He faced and defeated opponent, Nelson Monteiro via KO in the first round.
Nine months later, Pokam tasted his first professional defeat when he was disqualified against David Pierres-Louis.
Pokam picked up two TKO victories in his next two fights over Paul Williamson and Matt Ewin before he was defeated again, this time in a rematch against Ewin via rear naked choke in the first round.
To begin 2004, Pokam racked up two more wins before being disqualifed again, this time against future UFC competitor, Martin Kampmann at an event held in Stockholm, Sweden.
He dropped his next bout via rear naked choke and then in July of 2004, he dropped his third successive bout, this time via KO at the hands of British fighter, Paul Daley.
Pokam snapped the three fight losing streak with a KO win over Jose Mata but was then knocked out in the following bout by Itamar Rosa.
Professor X split his next four bouts, winning via split decision over Ken Hamamura in Japan and then losing via disqualification for the third time in his career against Sol Gilbert at Cage Rage 14. That loss was followed by a KO over Hun Kim and then a technical submission loss (armbar) to Ryuta Sakurai in a DEEP event.
Pokam finally began to string some wins together starting from September 2006 when he went on a five fight win streak fighting primarily in the Cage Rage organization. His win streak was broken however when he was submited by PRIDE veteran, Murilo Rua at Cage Rage 24 with a rear naked choke.
The loss didn't hamper Pokam too much though as he went on to a win a one night 8-man tournament held by the WAFC promotion on May 24, 2008. He stopped or submitted all three of his opponents to become the WAFC tournament champion.
Pokam pushed his win streak to seven by January of 2009 after finishing his next four opponents within the distance by either TKO or submission.
UFC
On the back of that seven fight win streak, Pokam will make his UFC debut at UFC 97 against PRIDE veteran, Denis Kang. The event will be held in Canada, thus making it the 12th country that Pokam will have fought in.
Professor X will return to the Octagon when he fills in for James Irvin at UFC 98 on May 23 against Miletich brawler, Drew McFedries.
