Wagnney Fabiano (born July 14, 1975) is a Brazilian professional mixed martial artist and Brazilian jiu jitsu black belt under Wendell Alexander and Alexandre Pederneiras.
He stands 5 ft. 6 in. (168 cm) tall and fights in the featherweight division (145 lbs.).
Fabiano was the only ever International Fight League featherweight champion and currently fights as a featherweight for World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC).
Early Career
Wagnney Fabiano made his professional mixed martial arts debut on June 2, 2000, against Charles Nestor in a bout for the UCC lightweight MMA world championship. After two, 10 minute rounds, Fabiano came out on top via unanimous decision.
Just shy of four years later, Fabiano had his second MMA bout when he faced Tommy Lee for the TKO World Super-Lightweight title. At the 2:46 mark of round 1, Fabiano tapped Lee with an arm triangle choke.
After another break from fighting, this time only a year and a half, Fabiano scored his third victory with a decision over Matt Fiordirosa.
Five months later, Fabiano knocked out Bao Quach with a punch at the 4:50 mark of round 1 in the Canada based, APEX promotion.
In November of 2006, Fabiano suffered the first professional loss of his career when he went down in a controversial split decision to UFC veteran and future WEC competitor, Jeff Curran.
IFL
In 2007, Fabiano signed with the US based, International Fight League. Competing as a lightweight, Fabiano made his IFL debut a successful one when he submitted Ian Loveland with an arm triangle choke at :59 of round 1.
Just under two months later, Fabiano picked up another arm triangle choke submission win when he tapped out Cam Ward at the 3:24 mark of round 1.
Fabiano's impressive submission streak continued in the IFL as he submitted Erik Owings in his next outing in June with an armbar at just 58 seconds of round 1.
In November of that year, Fabiano entered the IFL World Grand Prix in the lightweight division. As one of the four competitors in the grand prix, Fabiano made light work of John Gunderson to move into the final with a second round guillotine choke victory.
Fabiano opted out of fighting in the final, instead choosing to drop down to the newly created featherweight division where he faced LC Davis for the vacant belt. At 3:38 of the first round, Davis tapped to a Fabiano armbar to give Fabiano the win and the IFL featherweight championship.
In the first defense of his title, Fabiano impressed everyone with his ever improving stand-up as he dropped opponent, Shad Lierley with a one-two just 37 seconds into the fight which knocked Lierley cold.
WEC
Following the demise of the IFL, Fabiano was picked up by the Zuffa controlled, World Extreme Cagefighting organization. In his debut, at WEC 37, he faced former Shooto lightweight champion and highly ranked Japanese fighter, Akitoshi Tamura. In a lacklustre fight that saw both fighters cancel each other out on the ground for long periods of time, Fabiano eventually came out on top when he took advantage of a Tamura mistake late in the third round to submit him with an arm triangle choke.
Fabiano will next face Fredson Paixao at WEC 40 on April 5, 2009.
