Background

WEC 39: Brown vs. Garcia is an 11-bout fight card that is set to take place on March 1, 2009 in Corpus Christi, Texas at the American Bank Center.

The card will air live on the Versus Network at 9pm ET and its main event will feature a bout between WEC featherweight champion, Mike Brown against surging contender and UFC veteran, Leonard Garcia for the WEC featherweight championship.

Pre-Event Notes

WEC 39 was initially headlined by a WEC welterweight championship bout between between Carlos Condit and Brock Larson. However, once Condit had to pull out of the bout with an injury the WEC management thought it was instead time to fold the shallow weight class into the WEC's sister organization, the UFC.

Bart Palaszewski was originally supposed to take on UFC veteran, Rich Crunkilton but due to injury Crunkilton was replaced with Brazilian, Ricardo Lamas.

With ZUFFA's decision to dissolve the WEC welterweight division into the UFC, the Johny Hendricks vs. Alex Serdyukov will likely be the last ever WEC welterweight fight.
