Gladiator Challenge and K.O.T.C.

Looking at the 5'6" 145lb "California Kid" you might not realize that Urijah Faber (born May 14, 1979) is one of the most dominant fighters in the history of MMA. Despite his diminutive stature, Faber is a giant among Featherweights.

Beginning his pro Mixed Martial arts career with a first round submission victory in King of the Cage's farm league promotion, Gladiator Challenge on November 12, 2003, it was clear that UC-Davis' all-time wrestling win leader, Faber, was something special. Continuing to perform well with a first round TKO in his next match, Urijah was given the opportunity to face G.C. Bantamweight Champion, David Velasquez, whom he also defeated, this time walking away with his first decision win, and his first title belt.

Following a TKO over Del Hawkins in his next match, Faber was asked to fight for the King of the Cage promotion, along with his duties as the G.C. Bantamweight Champ. He won his first K.o.t.C. fight and was offered another title shot, this time facing K.o.t.C. Bantamweight kingpin, Eben Kaneshiro. Wresting the belt from Kaneshiro by submission, Faber had solidified as himself as a star in the small MMA organizations, now holding two titles simultaneously.

After working his way up to a record of 8-0 Faber fought Tyson Griffin, suffering the only loss of his career to date, and losing the G.C. Bantamweight Championship. Rebounding from the defeat "The California Kid" mounted a comeback which would see him winning his next eight fights. During the two years subsequent to the Griffin bout Faber stayed with K.o.t.C. and G.C. as well as taking matches in the T.K.O., F.C.P. and WEC promotions.

WEC and Present Day

On March 17, 2006, Faber started fighting in the World Extreme Cagefighting organization, beating Cole Escovedo by TKO and walking away with the WEC Featherweight Championship. Faber fought in only four more contests outside the WEC, before making that league his permanent home.

Since winning the WEC Featherweight strap, Faber has has remained unbeaten. He has successfully defended his title in five matches. In his first four WEC bouts Faber won by stoppage, bringing that streak of wins-by-stoppage to nine in a row. His WEC victories include wins over Joe Pearson, Dominic Cruz, Chance Farrar, Jeff Curran, and the legendary Jens Pulver. Pulver is the only fighter to date who has gone five rounds with "The California Kid".
