Pre-Event Notes
This event will be the first UFC event to ever be held in Germany.
Originally it was hoped that BJ Penn would defend his UFC lightweight title on this card against TUF 1's Kenny Florian. However, Penn turned down the bout after declaring he wanted to spend some time with his daughter and would prefer to fight in the summer.
Rumors abounded that Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic would make his return to the UFC at this card against an unknown opponent. The rumors went on to suggest that it could be against a number of different opponents ranging from Randy Couture and Tito Ortiz to Lyoto Machida. However, the rumors initially appeared unfounded.
In the early stages of the announcement of this event it was rumored that a bout between Randy Couture and Chuck Liddell could serve as the headlining attraction. That rumor was shot down shortly after too though as both fighters denied it.
The Franklin/Silva catchweight bout will mark Wanderlei Silva's first attempt at a weight drop throughout his career. The bout was made a catchweight bout after Rich Franklin turned down the fight at middleweight after wanting to establish himself in the light heavyweight division and not wanting to cut the weight.
Just over a month out from the event, it was announced that Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic would make his return against Mostapha Al Turk, leaving Todd Duffee without an opponent.
Heath Herring had to pull out of his bout with Cain Velasquez and was replaced by highly ranked Frenchmen, Cheick Kongo.
