Background

UFC 88: Breakthrough was a 9-bout fight card that was held on September 6, 2008 at the Phillips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia.

The card aired live on pay-per-view at 7pm PT and 10pm ET and was headlined by a UFC light heavyweight attraction between former UFC light heavyweight champion, Chuck Liddell and TUF 2 heavyweight winner, Rashad Evans.

A light heavyweight bout between former UFC middleweight champion, Rich Franklin and TUF 3 contestant, Matt Hamill served as the co-main event.

A welterweight bout between Karo Parisyan and Yoshiyuki Yoshida was originally slated to take place on the main card however, Parisyan suffered a back injury the day before the fight and the fight was scrapped. Dong Hyun Kim vs. Matt Brown was instead promoted to the main card.

Jason Day was the original opponent for Jason Lambert but a biceps and shoulder injury forced him out and he was replaced by Jason MacDonald.

Tim Boetsch was meant to face James Lee who replaced with Mike Patt after Lee sustained an injury.
