Pre-Event Notes
UFC 85 was originally scheduled to be headlined by a light heavyweight match-up between Chuck Liddell and Mauricio "Shogun" Rua. After Rua sustained a knee injury, he was replaced with TUF 2 winner, Rashad Evans. Liddell pulled out of the fight soon after, having suffered a torn hamstring in training. James Irvin was called up to face Evans in the main event instead but suffered an injury as well. There was talk of Luis Cane stepping up to face Evans, but Rashad declined the fight and his place on the show.
Matt Hughes vs. Thiago Alves was a match-up that came about purely because of the trouble to secure a decent main event.
Michael Bisping had originally been lined up to face Chris Leben but a longer than expected stint in jail stopped Leben from preparing properly. Nate Quarry was thrown around as an opponent for Bisping instead but Quarry was unavailable due to injury. Canadian fighter, Jason Day was eventually called up to face Bisping.
A welterweight attraction between British fighter, Paul Kelly and Jonathan Goulet was signed to the card but injuries to both fighters nixed the bout.
Roan Carneiro was first scheduled to face Ryo Chonan in a rematch from an earlier bout in Japan but once Chonan pulled out with injury, Kevin Burns was called up on short notice to make his UFC debut against the Brazilian.
Dutch heavyweight, Antoni Hardonk was meant to face British banger, Neil Wain. An injury to Wain had the UFC calling up Eddie Sanchez as a replacement on short notice.
At the weigh-in, Thiago Alves failed to make weight for his fight with Matt Hughes, coming in three pounds overweight at 174 lbs.. Hughes agreed to a catchweight bout so the fight could go ahead.
