Pre-Event Notes

BJ Penn and Joe Stevenson will fight for the vacant lightweight championship after former lightweight champion, Sean Sherk was stripped of the title following a positive test for steroids following his UFC 73 title defense against Hermes Franca.

The Wilson Gouveia/Jason Lambert bout was originally scheduled to take place on the UFC 76 card however an injury to Gouveia forced the rescheduling of the bout to this card.

Penn opened a large gash on Stevenson's forehead in the first round with an elbow that had blood streaming down Stevenson's face. A fired up Stevenson came out for the second round trying to make something happen but to no avail as he was dropped by punches from Penn and then dominated positionally before having his back taken by Penn. From there, Penn used the slipperiness of the blood to his advantage as he sunk in the rear naked choke to force the tap. With the win Penn claimed the vacant UFC lightweight championship.
