Pre-Event Notes
Originally the main event of UFC 78 was to be a UFC lightweight championship bout between UFC lightweight champion, Sean Sherk and former UFC welterweight champion, BJ Penn. That bout was nixed however, after Sean Sherk tested positive for steroids following his victory over Hermes Franca at UFC 73.
The main event was then rumored to be a rematch between Rashad Evans and former UFC light heavyweight champion, Tito Ortiz. Ortiz did not accept the fight however, and Michael Bisping stepped up in his place.
The Bisping/Evans fight is the first time in history that two "The Ultimate Fighter" winners will face off against each other.
Karo Parisyan was originally supposed to face fellow judoka, Hector Lombard. However, visa issues to Lombard stopped that bout from taking place and Ryo Chonan stepped up in his place.
Ed Herman was originally to take on former UFC middleweight title challenger, David Terrell but another injury in a long line of injuries to Terrell had Joe Doerksen stepping up in his place to face Herman in a rematch from an earlier bout in 2004.
