Background
UFC 77: Hostile Territory was a 9-bout fight card that was held on October 20, 2007 at the U.S. Bank Arena in Cincinnati, Ohio.
The card aired live on pay-per-view and was headlined by a UFC Middleweight Championship bout between UFC middleweight champions, Anderson Silva and former UFC middleweight champion, Rich Franklin.
A heavyweight bout between former UFC heavyweight champion, Tim Sylvia against the undefeated, Brandon Vera served as a co-main event.

Pre-Event Notes
Demian Maia was originally slated to face Marvin Eastman. An injury to Eastman forced his removal, and Ryan Jensen stepped up in his place.
Jorge Gurgel was slated to face Doug Evans but after Evans pulled out, Alvin Robinson replaced him.

Preliminary Card
- Lightweight Bout: Matt Grice defs. Jason Black via split decision (28-29, 29-28, 29-28). The bout was initially announced as a split draw but after it was found a judge had miscalculated the bout result was changed to a split decision victory for Grice.
- Welterweight Bout: Josh Burkman defs. Forrest Petz via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28).
- Middleweight Bout: Demian Maia defs. Ryan Jensen via submission (rear naked choke) at 2:40 of round 1.
- Middleweight Bout: Yushin Okami defs. Jason MacDonald via unanimous decision (30-27 x3).
Main Card
- Middleweight Bout: Alan Belcher defs. Kalib Starnes via TKO (cut) at 1:39 of round 2.
- Light Heavyweight Bout: Stephan Bonnar defs. Eric Schafer via TKO (strikes) at 2:47 of round 2.
- Lightweight Bout: Alvin Robinson defs. Jorge Gurgel via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-27, 29-27).
- Heavyweight Bout: Tim Sylvia defs. Brandon Vera via unanimous decision (29-27, 29-28, 29-28).
- UFC Middleweight Championship Bout: Anderson Silva defs. Rich Franklin via TKO (strikes) at 1:07 of round 2 to defend his middleweight title for the second time.
Silva's muay thai clinch and just superior striking was the sticking point again between these two. Silva dropped Franklin at the end of the first and a wobbly Franklin showed up for the second bell only to be destroyed with one of the best combinations in UFC history.
