Background

UFC 73: Stacked was a 9-bout fight card that was held on July 7, 2007 at the ARCO Arena in Sacramento, California.

The card aired live on pay-per-view and was headlined by a UFC middleweight championship bout between champion, Anderson Silva and former three-time middleweight King of Pancrase, Nate Marquardt.

A lightweight championship bout between champ, Sean Sherk and Hermes Franca as well as a light heavyweight contest between former champ, Tito Ortiz and TUF 2 heavyweight winner, Rashad Evans, served as co-main events.

Jorge Gurgel was originally rumored to face future WEC lightweight champion, Jamie Varner. Gurgel's opponent instead turned out to be Diego Saraiva.

Jeff Joslin was the original opponent for Chris Lytle, he was replaced with Drew Fickett after Joslin pulled out injury. An injury then to Fickett forced his removal and Lytle was instead matched up against Jason Gilliam.

UFC 73 marks the return of Stephan Bonnar from a steroid supension the was enforced after his fight with Forrest Griffin at UFC 62.

Ortiz was deducted a point in the second round for grabbing the fence, and would have won the fight 29-28 if not for the deduction.
