Background

UFC 72: Stacked was an 8-bout fight card that was held on June 16, 2007 at The Odyssey in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

The card aired live on pay-per-view and was headlined by a UFC middleweight bout between former champion, Rich Franklin and PRIDE veteran, Yushin Okami.

A light heavyweight bout between TUF 1 light heavyweight winner, Forrest Griffin and tough brawler, Hector Ramirez served as a co-main event.

Pre-Event Notes

This was the first ever UFC event to be held in Northern Ireland.

Rich Franklin was originally meant to take on tough Dutch striker, Martin Kampmann in the main event, however a serious knee injury to Kampmann ruled him out and he was replaced with Yushin Okami.

UFC 72 was originally a 9 bout fight card with a heavyweight bout between Jake O'Brien and TUF 2's Tom Murphy set to take place. An injury to O'Brien though just before the card meant a replacement could not be found for Murphy and the whole bout was scrapped.

Marcus Davis was initially to face Paul Taylor on the card, but an injury to Taylor forced a replacement in the form of Jason Tan.

Franklin outworked a placid Yushin Okami on the feet for the first two rounds, however in the second, Okami came to life and almost finished Franklin with a kimura. Franklin escaped and was awarded the 2 rounds to 1 unanimous victory. With the win, Franklin earned a rematch and a shot at the UFC middleweight title, held by Anderson Silva.
