Background

UFC 71: Liddell vs. Jackson was a 9-bout fight card that was held on May 26, 2007 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The card aired live on pay-per-view and was headlined by a UFC light heavyweight (205 lbs.) championship bout between champion, Chuck Liddell and former PRIDE middleweight (205 lbs.) title challenger, Quinton Jackson.

A light heavyweight bout between TUF 2 heavyweight contestant, Keith Jardine and UFC debutant Houston Alexander as well as a welterweight bout between Karo Parisyan and Josh Burkman served as co-main events.

Sean Salmon was originally meant to face Eric Schafer but an injury forced Alan Belcher to fill in as a replacement.

David Heath was the original opponent for Keith Jardine but pulled out after filling in as a replacement for Forrest Griffin at UFC 70. There was rumors of Tito Ortiz fighting Jardine but in the end the UFC settled on Houston Alexander.

Both fighters were tentative early until Liddell lunged in with an uppercut to the body that Jackson countered with a left hook knocking Liddell to the mat. Some follow up punches seperated Liddell from consciousness giving Rampage the victory.
