Pre-Event Notes

The welterweight championship bout and rematch between GSP and Matt Hughes was originally scheduled to take place at UFC 63. However, an injury to St. Pierre forced his removal and he was replaced by BJ Penn.

Alessio Sakara was originally meant to face Brazilian, Wilson Gouveia but an injury to Gouveia had Drew McFedries stepping in.

Antoni Hardonk was supposed to face TUF 2 heavyweight runner-up, Brad Imes but an Imes injury had Sherman Pendergarst fill in.

Sylvia controlled the bout with his superior height and reach advantage. He kept Monson on the end of his jab for the majority of the bout and was only ever in danger in the second round when Monson scored a takedown. At the end of the five rounds it was as clear as the damage on Monson's face that Sylvia had taken the decision.

  • Welterweight Championship Bout: Georges St. Pierre defs. Matt Hughes via TKO (head kick and elbows) at 1:25 of round 2 to become the new UFC welterweight champion.

A determined GSP came out and picked Hughes apart clinically for the entire duration of the bout. GSP almost finished the fight in the first round as he dropped Hughes with a superman punch but the round ended before he could capitalize. The end came shortly into the second as Hughes went to catch a leg kick from GSP that turned out to be a high kick, collecting Hughes upside the head and sending him to the canvas. GSP jumped on Hughes and forced the referee to step in with some hard elbow strikes.
