Pre-Event Notes

Shortly after Anderson Silva's 49 second knockout victory over Chris Leben at UFC Fight Night 5, a poll went up on the UFC's website asking who should be Silva's next opponent. The overwhelming majority selected UFC middleweight champion, Rich Franklin.

The bout for the vacant lightweight championship between Sean Sherk and Kenny Florian is the first UFC lightweight championship bout since UFC 41 in 2003 when BJ Penn and Caol Uno fought to a draw for the vacant title.

A light heavyweight bout between TUF 2's Keith Jardine and TUF 3's Mike Nickels was set to take place on this card but the fight was cancelled the day before the event when Nickels aggravated a pre-existing back injury.

Kalib Starnes was a late replacement for David Terrell who pulled out with a sinus infection.

Sherk utilized his excellent cardio and wrestling along with his suffocating top control to stifle Florian for the full five rounds. Florian had his moments and even managed to open a nasty gash on Sherk's forehead with an elbow. The gash however, simply began to bleed profusely with much of it ending up all over Florian. With the unanimous judges' verdict, Sherk becomes the second ever UFC lightweight champion.

  • Middleweight Championship Bout: Anderson Silva defs. Rich Franklin via TKO (strikes) at 2:59 of round 1 to become the new UFC middleweight champion.

Silva used his deadly muay thai clinch to completely control Franklin and deliver some vicious knees to the body and head. One particluar knee, broke Franklin's nose badly. The end came shortly after as Franklin wilted under the furious attack and the bout was stopped.
