Background

UFC 60: Hughes vs. Gracie was a 9-bout fight card that was held on May 27, 2006 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.

The card aired live on pay-per-view and was headlined by a catchweight (175 lbs.) bout between UFC welterweight champion, Matt Hughes and UFC Hall of Famer, Royce Gracie.

Royce Gracie would make his first UFC appearance at UFC 60 since UFC 5 back in 1995.

Leonard Garcia was to face Spencer Fisher but suffered a broken leg and was replaced by Matt Wiman.

Evan Tanner was Jeremy Horn's original opponent but after injury was replaced by Chael Sonnen.

Main Card

The evolution of mixed martial arts was plain to see as Hughes dominated the fabled Gracie on the ground. Hughes threatened with submission attempts while Gracie defended admirably. Hughes gained Gracie's back towards the end of the first round and unleashed unprotected strikes on Gracie, forcing the stoppage.
