Pre-Event Notes

The card marks the return of the UFC lightweight division which had not been seen since UFC 49.

The card featured American based fighters vs. Canadian fighters with five of the eight Canadians being champions in the TKO Major League MMA promotion (Hominick - Featherweight, Stout - Lightweight, St. Pierre - Welterweight, Loiseau - Middleweight and Larenas - Heavyweight).

The event marks the return of BJ Penn since he abandoned his welterweight title after defeating Matt Hughes at UFC 46 in 2004.

A welterweight bout between TUF 1 middleweight winner, Diego Sanchez and John Alessio was originally scheduled for this card but was nixed due to injury.

Nate Marquardt makes his return on this card since testing positive for a banned substance after his victory over Ivan Salaverry at UFC Fight Night 1.

Spencer Fisher was a last minute replacement for TUF 1's Kenny Florian.

Icho Larenas was a short notice replacement for Kristof Midoux.
