Pre-Event Notes
Shamrock and Kimo will meet in a rematch from their UFC 8 clash back in 1996.
Tim Sylvia and Frank Mir will fight for the vacant heavyweight championship that was vacated after Sylvia tested positive for Stanzonol after his title defense against Gan McGee at UFC 44.
Phil Baroni and Evan Tanner meet for a second time after their first fight was controversially stopped at UFC 45. A miscommunication between referee Larry Landless and Baroni saw the fight prematurely stopped. Landless later issued an apology to Baroni.
"Lightning" Lee Murray was to face Curtis Stout on the show's undercard but travel issues kept him out. He was replaced by South African, Trevor Prangley.
GSP was meant to face Jason "Mayhem" Miller on the card but legal issues kept Mayhem out of the cage and he was replaced by newcomer, Jay Hieron.

- Heavyweight Championship Bout: Frank Mir defs. Tim Sylvia via technical submission (armbar) at :50 of round 1.
Sylvia unwisely countered a Mir body kick with a takedown and then tried to lay down some ground and pound. Mir immediately capitalized by trapping the arm, swinging off the cage and locking it tight. Sylvia tried to slam out of it but the hold was too much and the arm visibly snapped at the forearm. Referee Herb Dean correctly stopped the bout giving Mir the heavyweight belt.
- Heavyweight Bout: Ken Shamrock defs. Kimo Leopoldo via KO (knee) at 1:26 of round 1.
Kimo rushed Shamrock into the fence to start the bout. Once the fight moved off the fence Shamrock landed a nice clean knee to Kimo's jaw that put him down and out.
