Pre-Event Notes
The Tito Ortiz/Chuck Liddell fight is a much awaited and anticipated grudge match that stemmed from what Liddell believed to be Ortiz ducking him while he was champion. Ortiz refutes this saying that he and Liddell had a pact never to fight each other as they were friends.
Liddell had been the established number one contender since before Tito fought Ken Shamrock at UFC 40, but gave up his shot in order to make way for Shamrock to return. After Ortiz defeated Shamrock, Liddell was to get the next shot but Ortiz did not defend his belt and an interim title was set up with Liddell and Randy Couture contesting it. Couture defeated Liddell putting the Ortiz match on the backburner but after Couture defeated Ortiz this bout was set up to create the definitive No.1 contender.
Andrei Arlovski was to face Tim Sylvia but trace amounts of an illegal substance (stanzonol) were still present in Sylvia after he tested postive following his UFC 44 title victory over Gan McGee and he was forced out of the bout a day before the event.
Wes Sims stepped in on short notice to face Mike Kyle who was left without an opponent after Cabbage stepped in to face Arlovski.
