Pre-Event Notes

This will be Penn's first lightweight title defense since losing in a welterweight championship bout against Georges St. Pierre at UFC 94 and his second overall.

Forrest Griffin was to face Thiago Silva at the event but after UFC management deemed that UFC Middleweight Champion, Anderson Silva needed a high profile bout at light heavyweight to excite him, Thiago was replaced.

Thales Leites was brought in on short notice to replace Rousimar Palhares in a bout against Alessio Sakara.

George Sotiropoulos was to face TUF 5's Rob Emerson but a cut that required stitches forced Emerson out of the bout and he was instead replaced by TUF 8's George Roop.

Griffin was no match for Silva as Silva taunted the former champion while dropping him three times. The third putting Forrest sprawled out on the mat to give Silva the awe inspiring victory.

Florian attempted to wear Penn out in the clinch against the fence for the majority of the bout but was unsuccessful. When given space, Penn would blast Florian with powerful strikes. In the fourth, Penn turned the tide on Florian and scored an easy takedown. From there he passed to mount and eventually Florian's back before seizing a rear naked choke to make his second successful title defense.
