Octagon

The Octagon™ or The UFC Octagon™ is the name of the eight-sided mat and cage used in the UFC. The name has been trademarked, but the UFC allows other organizations to use octagonal cages (but not the trademarked name) for their events.
The sides of The Octagon™ are made of vinyl-covered, chain-link fence. The mat itself is canvas. Various sources seem to report differing dimensions of The Octagon™, but most reports indicate that the cage is roughly 30ft across and that the fence is about six feet high. (See references.)
The UFC claims that The Octagon™ provides "a neutral arena to showcase the skills of UFC mixed martial arts athletes." The "neutral" claim is based on the supposition that no fighting style or martial arts discipline has an inherent advantage over another in the eight-sided arena.
