Background

Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg is a 9-bout fight card that is set to take place on August 15, 2009 at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California.

The card will air live on Showtime at 10pm ET and will feature for the first time a 145 lbs. Womens Championship bout between undefeated, Gina Carano and Chute Boxe wrecking machine, Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos

A Light Heavyweight Title Bout between champion, Renato Sobral and Gegard Mousasi as well as an Interim title clash between Interim Champion, Gilbert Melendez and Mitsuhiro Ishida will serve as co-main events.

Pre-Event Notes

Gina Carano vs. Cristiane Santos is the first Women's bout to headline an event by a major mixed martial arts promotion.

Rounds were extended to five, five minute rounds for the bout as opposed to the common three minute rounds.

A heavyweight championship bout was originally to take place between champion, Alistair Overeem and Fabricio Werdum. Complications with a pre-existing hand injury forced Overeem out however and Werdum was instead matched up against Mike Kyle.

Renato Sobral vs. Gegard Mousasi originally was to happen at Affliction: Trilogy but when the event was cancelled it was moved to Strikeforce and made a championship bout due to Sobral's status as Strikeforce champion.

Interim Champ, Gilbert Melendez was meant to face Lightweight champion, Josh Thomson to unify the titles but Thomson was injured and replaced by Mitsuhiro Ishida.

A welterweight championship bout between Nick Diaz and Joe Riggs was also meant to be on the card. Riggs had to pull out due to a bad reaction to a drug and was replaced by Jay Hieron who had become free due to the collapse of Affliction: Trilogy. However, when Diaz did not turn up for a pre-fight drug test he was not licensed for the event and was replaced with TUF 7's Jesse Taylor with the bout being reduced to a non-title affair and on the untelevised portion of the card.
