Background
A former Japanese Police officer, Shinya "Tobikan Judan" Aoki (born May 9, 1983) is an accomplished grappler and mixed martial artist. The Black Belt in both Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and Judo has earned his nickname, which means "Master of Flying Submissions". in addition to competiting inMMA as a representative of Paraestra Tokyo, Aoki also teaches his craft at Paraestra Kasai.
DEEP and Shooto
Aoki's first three opponents were in the DEEP promotion - with his debut coming on November 24, 2003 - and all suffered the same fate, submission loss due to Armbar. Unfortunately, Shinya then suffered his first defeat, a KO at the hands of Jutaro Nakao.
Each of Aoki's next five bouts were held under the banner of Shooto, he is still that organization's reigning Middleweight Champion (167lb). Two wins started a comeback for Shinya, the first a standing armlock submission over Keith Wisniewski, and the second a DQ win (low blow) against Shigetoshi Iwase. The budding win streak was then stopped cold with a unanimous decision loss to veteran Hayato Sakurai.
Despite the recent loss a TKO over Kuniyoshi Hironaka, earned the "Tobikan Judan" a DEEP title shot against Middleweight boss Akira Kikuchi. Winning the bout with a unanimous decision, Aoki emerged triumphant.
Still champion, Shinya has twice returned to Shooto competition, winning both matches. The first a DQ when George Sotiropoulos landed a low blow, and the second a successful rematch with Kikuchi.
PRIDE
Shinya Aoki made his PRIDE debut on November, 5, 2006 winning with a truly spectacular flying Triangle Choke against Jason Black. "Tobikan Judan" was again in rare form when he stopped the highly-ranked Joachim Hansen with an amazing first round Gogoplata.
Aoki then capped off his perfect record in PRIDE with yet another first round submission, this time an Armbar on "the dyslexic's nightmare" Brian Lo-A-Njoe.
DREAM
After ending 2007 with a Yarrenoka New Year's eve win over Jung Bu-Kyung, Aoki moved on to the DREAM Lightweight Grand Prix. In the tournament he was first pit against Gesias Cavalcante, in a match which would result in a No Contest, when Calvancante injured Aoki with illegal elbow strikes. The two men met again a little over one month later, this time Shinya was victorious walking away with a unanimous decision.
His next bout saw Aoki square off with Katsuhiko Nagata, and also saw the "Tobikan Judan" become the first high-profile MMA competitor to win multiple bouts via Gogoplata. Following up with a decision win over Caol Uno propelled Shinya into the Lightweight GP finals.
Sadly for Aoki he title hopes were dashed on the rocks of Joachim Hansen's fists, when "Hellboy" pounded out a victory in the tournament finale. Shinya's most recent match was a dominant neck-crank submission win against Todd Moore.
