Profile
"Sugar" Shane Nelson (born November 29, 1984) is an American professional mixed martial artist training under BJ Penn in Hilo, Hawaii.
He stands 5 ft. 9 in. (175 cm) tall and fights in the lightweight division (155 lbs.).
Nelson was a contestant on The Ultimate Fighter: Team Nogueira vs. Team Mir and currently competes as a lightweight for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
Early Career
Shane Nelson made his professional mixed martial arts debut on August 28, 2004 for the Hawaii based, You Think Your Tough (ed note: lol "your") promotion. He submitted his opponent, Wayne Salazar with a guillotine choke in 2:29 of round 1.
After two more victories, Nelson suffered defeat for the first time in his career against Harris Sarmiento in July of 2005. He went down via unanimous decision after two rounds.
He followed that loss with another as he was on the losing end of a majority decision against Robert Villapondo. A win halted the losing slide, but he would lose the following bout to Jamal Perkins via unanimous decision.
Nelson finally strung some wins together after the Perkins defeat and was victorious in his next six bouts culminating in a split decision win over Kaleo Kwan in January of 2008.
The Ultimate Fighter
Following the Kwan victory, Nelson was added to the cast of The Ultimate Fighter: Team Nogueira vs. Team Mir. As one of 16 lightweight contestants, Nelson made it into the house with a decision defeat of Charles Diaz in the qualifying round.
In episode 4, Nelson was selected by opposing team coach, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, to face Efrain Escudero. Nelson was confident in his ability to submit Escudero heading into the bout but wound up getting submitted himself, via triangle choke just before round two expired.
At The Ultimate Fighter 8 Finale, Nelson faced teammate, George Roop on the show's undercard and was victorious via split decision after three rounds.
UFC Career
Nelson kicked off his post-TUF UFC career at UFC 96 in March, 2009 in a controversial bout with PRIDE veteran, Aaron Riley. Nelson dropped Riley early with a punch that Riley seemed to immediately recover from but the referee halted the bout anyway, giving Nelson the TKO victory.
UFC President, Dana White vowed to make amends for the poor call and set up an immediate rematch between the two, which is set to take place on the undercard of UFC 101.
