Background

Sengoku: Ninth Battle is the tenth installment of Japanese promotion's, World Victory Road's "Sengoku" series and a 13 bout fight card.

The card will take place in the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan on August 2, 2009 and will feature the semi finals and finals of Sengoku's 16-man featherweight (143 lbs.) tournament.

A lightweight championship between champion, Satoru Kitaoka and Shooto veteran, Mizuto Hirota will serve as the main event.

Pre-Event Notes

Prior to the event, Kazuo Misaki was arrested for driving while talking on a cellphone and then speeding away from the scene which injured a policeman's wrist. Due to this his whole purse will be dedicated to the Japan Foundation for AIDS Prevention and even if he defeats Nakamura he will not be awarded a title shot.

Blagnoi Ivanov will make his Sengoku debut after earning notoriety by defeating Fedor Emelianenko in Combat Sambo competition.

Bantamweight Final: Ryosuke Komori defs. Takeshi Numajiri via TKO (punch) at 3:25 of round 1.
Featherweight Final: Shigeki Osawa defs. Toru Harai via TKO (punches) at 4:24 of round 1.
Lightweight Final: Ikuo Usuda defs. Koji Ando via unanimous decision.

Main Card

Heavyweight Bout: Yoshihiro Nakao defs. Choi Mu Bae via unanimous decision (30-28, 30-28, 30-29).

Featherweight Tournament Semi Final: Hatsu Hioki defs. Masanori Kanehara via unanimous decision (30-27, 29-27, 29-28).
Featherweight Tournament Semi Final: Michihiro Omigawa defs. Marlon Sandro via split decision (29-30, 30-30, 30-30).

Two judges ruled the bout a draw but due to their "must decision" have to award the bout to someone regardless. Both judges awarded the fight for Omigawa in a very interesting decision.

Featherweight Tournament Alternate Bout: Chan Sung Jung defs. Matt Jaggers via submission (triangle choke) at 1:25 of round 2.

Lightweight Bout: Eiji Mitsuoka defs. Clay French via submission (guillotine choke) at 1:51 of round 1.
Welterweight Bout: Dan Hornbuckle defs. Akihiro Gono via KO (head kick) at 2:50 of round 3.
Heavyweight Bout: Blagoi Ivanov defs. Kazuyuki Fujita via split decision (28-30, 30-27, 29-29).
Middleweight Bout: Kazuo Misaki defs. Kazuhiro Nakamura via technical submission (guillotine choke) at 3:03 of round 1.

Featherweight Tournament Final: Masanori Kanehara defs. Michihiro Omigawa via split decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-29).

Hatsu Hioki had to pull out due to too much damage sustained in the opening bout. Kanehara filled in and controlled Omigawa for the first two rounds and took a relatively comfortable split decision to become Sengoku's first featherweight champion.

Lightweight Championship Bout: Mizuto Hirota defs. Satoru Kitaoka via TKO (punches) at 2:50 of round 4.

Kitaoka tried valiantly to get the fight to the floor but Hirota would effectively stuff takedowns and get the fight back to the feet if it went there. While on the feet Hirota punished Kitaoka and after three rounds the champion began to tire and Hirota capitalized to pounce and finish the champ to become the new Sengoku lightweight champion.
