Profile

Sam "Hands of Stone" Stout (born April 23, 1984) is a Canadian professional mixed martial artist who fights out of Xtreme Couture.

He stands 5 ft. 9 in. (175 cm) tall and fights in the lightweight division.

He is the TKO lightweight champion, and currently fights as a lightweight for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).

Early Career and TKO

Sam Stout made his professional mixed martial arts debut on June 7, 2003, losing to Jay Estrada via rear naked choke submission as a part of the Total Martial Arts Challenge.

He fought to a draw with Joey Clark in his next bout before entering the Canada based TKO promotion. After going 6-0 in the organization with six (T)KO finishes he was awarded a shot at the TKO lightweight championship. After three close rounds against Donald Ouimet, Stout earned a split decision victory and the lightweight title.

In a rematch with Ouimet just under four months later at TKO 23, he removed any doubt from their first match-up when he KO'd Ouimet 4.43 into the first round.

UFC Career

Stout made his UFC debut at UFC 58: USA vs. Canada. The 8-fight card each featured, as implied, USA fighters up against Canadian fighters, with five of the Canadian fighters being (at the time) current champions in the TKO organization.

Stout was originally meant to face Kenny Florian but Florian had to pull out with injury and was instead replaced by Spencer Fisher. Stout defeated Fisher via split decision in an all out war which was the first UFC lightweight fight since the division was abandoned in 2004.

Stout's next fight was at The Ultimate Fighter 3 Finale, three months later against the opponent he was originally slated to face at UFC 58, Kenny Florian. Florian exposed Stout's weakness on the ground early, defeating Stout via rear naked choke submission at 1.46 of round 1.

After the loss, Stout was allowed to return and defend his TKO title against the first man to ever defeat him, Jay Estrada at TKO 27. Stout defeated Estrada via arm bar 1.21 into round 2. In the third defense of his TKO title, Stout defeated Fabio Holanda via corner stoppage at the end of second round at TKO 28.

Following his two TKO title defenses, Stout received a call back to the UFC where he would headline UFC Fight Night 10 in a rematch against Spencer Fisher. In another exciting bout, Stout ended up on the losing end. He suffered a unanimous decision loss to Fisher after three tough rounds.

After another trip to TKO and another successful title defense (this time against Martin Grandmont), Stout returned to the UFC at UFC 80 to face Per Eklund. Stout's takedown defense and superior striking was too much for Eklund as he worked his way to a unanimous decision victory over the Swedish fighter.

Stout was matched up against TUF 4 veteran, Rich Clementi at UFC 83. The first UFC fight card ever in Canada. Stout suffered a split decision loss to Clementi in a bout that could very easily have gone Stout's way.

In a disappointing return to England, Stout dropped a unanimous decision to Terry Etim at UFC 89.
