Early Career
"Ruthless" Robbie Lawler (born March 20, 1982) qualified for his first professional MMA bout by knocking out both Jerry Hudsperth and Ernie Ward at the EC Trials - 2000 US MMA National Championships. Lawler made his debut on April 7, 2001 and scored a TKO victory in the first round. He then went on to achieve a 4-0 record, each of his victories coming by way of KO or TKO.
UFC
After experiencing the first decision win of his career, against Aaron Riley, Lawler faced off with Steve Berger, and got right back to knocking people out, winning the match via TKO. "Ruthless" Robbie's next knockout victim was Tiki Ghosn, who lasted a mere 1:29 before succumbing to a barrage of strikes.
Robbie Lawler was forced to submit due to an injury in his next outing, losing to Pete Spratt. Another decision victory, this time over veteran Chris Lytle, put Robbie back on track. Unfortunately a second loss was to follow, an unlikely KO dished out by Nick Diaz. Lawler's stint in The Ultimate Fighting Championship ended poorly for him, with a perfectly executed Triangle Choke from the late Evan Tanner, forcing Robbie to tap.
Icon and Others
After departing from the UFC "Ruthless" Robbie Lawler began a two year partnership with Icon Sport. A second round KO of Falaniko Vitale put the Icon middleweight division on notice that Lawler had arrived.
Next Robbie took a fight in King of the Cage, against Jeremy Brown, who Lawler beat by Armbar, in the one and only submission victory of his entire fighting life. Returning to Icon to knock out Falaniko Vitale again, this time for the the promotion's Middleweight Championship, lead to a highly anticipated showdown with Jason "Mayhem" Miller.
On September, 2, 2006 Robbie suffered his fourth loss, submitting to Miller's Arm Triangle, and losing the title in the process. One of PRIDE Fighting Championship's few forays into the U.S. played host to Lawler's next bout, a battle against Joey Villasenor. In just 0:22 Villasenor was out cold, floored by a flying knee.
Then came the only IFL match of "Ruthless" Robbie's career, a TKO win over Eduardo Pamplona. Having reestablished himself as a contender, Lawler was granted a second chance at the Icon belt. In a fourth frame of a five round slugfest Lawler knocked out Frank Trigg to once again capture the Icon Middleweight Championship. Robbie was ultimately stripped of the title for a failure to defend it, after Lawler had signed with ProElite.
EliteXC
In 2007 "Ruthless" Robbie Lawler signed with ProElite's EliteXC promotion. His first match under their banner was for the organization's vacant middleweight belt. Pit against PRIDE veteran Maurilo "Ninja" Rua, Lawler found his way to yet another TKO victory.
Robbie's first title defense ended in controversial fashion when an accidental thumb in eye of his opponent, Scott Smith, causing the bout to be ruled a No Contest. The pair later held a rematch in which Lawler scored a TKO at 2: 35 of the second round.
Lawler was recently booked to face Joey Villasenor for the second time. The match will be for the EliteXC middleweight strap and is to be held November, 8, 2008.
