Early Career
Roan Carneiro made his professional mixed martial arts debut on July 24, 2000 at a Heroes event in Brazil. He was defeated in his debut via decision by fellow Brazilian, Marcelo Belmiro.
Over a year later, Carneiro returned to competition against Anderson Silva and submitted to strikes early in the first round.
Another length break of ten months followed, but Carneiro finally picked up his first his victory in November, 2002 when he forced Carlos Esponja to submit to strikes.
Four victories followed, before Chonan headed to Japan where he faced Ryo Chonan in the DEEP organization. Carneiro was dominating the bout but the bout was controversially awarded to Chonan in the third round due to a cut that may or may not have been worthy of a stoppage.
Nevertheless, Carneiro responded by submitting the awesomely named Claudio Popeye and then making it to the final of a one night, eight man tournament held by the WCFC promotion. He defeated Gregory Buckingham and Matt Horwich via split decision before being stopped by Leonardo Lucio Nascimento.
Two victories followed in 2006, before he closed out the year with a unanimous decision loss to Fabio Negao.
UFC
Regardless of the loss to Negao, Carneiro opened 2007 as a member of the UFC roster. Originally set to face TUF 2's Anthony Torres, Carneiro instead faced Rich Clementi at UFC Fight Night 9. Carneiro overpowered Clementi for three rounds and earned himself a unanimous decision.
Just over two months later, Carneiro was matched against highly ranked welterweight, Jon Fitch at UFC Fight Night 10. Carneiro dominated the first round and looked on his way to an impressive victory. Things changed in the second however as Fitch suddenly became dominant and managed to choke out the BJJ black belt with a rear naked choke.
Carneiro got back on track at UFC 79 when he stopped wily Peruvian grappler, Tony DeSouza with punches midway through the second round.
Scheduled to rematch Ryo Chonan at UFC 85, Carneiro instead faced the unheralded, Kevin Burns. Dominant in the first round, Carneiro got sloppy in the second round and was amazing submitted with a triangle choke from the blue belt Burns.
Looking to shake off the stunning defeat, Carneiro faced Chonan at UFC 88 and after three close rounds was judged the split decision loser.
He was released from his UFC contract following the defeat.
