Profile

Rafael Assuncao (born July 19, 1982) is a Brazilian professional mixed martial artist and Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt.

He stands 5 ft. 5 in. (166 cm) tall and fights in the featherweight division (145 lbs.).

Assuncao currently fights as a featherweight for the World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) organization.

He is the younger brother of UFC veteran, Junior Assuncao.

Early Career

Rafael Assuncao made his professional mixed martial arts debut for the International Sport Combat Federation on January 23, 2004. He demolished his opponent, Chris Clark, with strikes in the first round.

After consecutive victories via armbar, Assuncao faced Jorge Masvidal at Full Throttle 1 and defeated him via unanimous decision.

Another submission win followed before Assuncao faced another notable opponent in Joe Lauzon at an Absolute Fighting Championships event. Assuncao impressively submitted Lauzon in the second round to improve to 6-0.

Victories over Nick Mamalis and James Birdsley followed before Assuncao escaped experienced campaigner, Jeff Curran in November, 2006. Assuncao suffered his first professional defeat as he found himself on the losing end of a majority decision after three rounds.

Assuncao bounced back impressively from the loss by going 4-0 over 2007 and 2008 with the last victory coming via 12 second KO over Joe Pearson.

WEC

Assuncao's free agency came to an end in 2009 as he signed with the WEC. His highly anticipated debut came at WEC 40 against Jameel Massouh. Assuncao looked comfortable and was never in any danger in the bout but didn't look spectacular as he claimed a very comfortable unanimous decision victory.

At WEC 43 Assuncao will look to notch his second WEC victory when he faces Yves Jabouin.
