Profile
Phillipe "The Filipino Assassin" Nover (born February 3, 1984) is an American/Filipino professional mixed martial artist and a black belt in Brazilian jiu jitsu under Alexander Freitas.
He stands 5 ft. 9 in. (175 cm) tall and fights in the lightweight division.
He was the lightweight runner-up of The Ultimate Fighter: Team Nogueira vs. Team Mir and currently fights as a lightweight for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
Early Career
Phillipe Nover made his professional mixed martial arts debut on July 19, 2003 at Reality Fighting 4 against Ronald Stalling. In 43 seconds, Nover defeated Stalling via guillotine choke.
Just under a year later, at a Combat Zone event, Nover returned to the cage against Jason Dublin. The two fought to a draw after two five minute rounds.
Nover's next four fights came under the Ring of Combat banner. He recorded victories in each with both submissions and punches.
The Ultimate Fighter
In early 2008, Nover was selected to participate in The Ultimate Fighter: Team Nogueira vs. Team Mir, the 8th season of MMA reality show, The Ultimate Fighter.
TUF 8 featured 32 mixed martial artists spread over two weight classes, lightweight and light heavyweight.
In the first episode of the series, Nover feinted while being introduced to the show by Dana White. The incident led to many fighters labelling Nover as weak but the stigma was short lived after he dispacted of the undefeated Joe Duarte via second round rear naked choke to earn his place in the house.
Phillipe was the first lightweight chosen by Team Nogueira. On Episode 8, Nover was selected to face the highly touted Dave Kaplin of Team Mir. Nover dropped Kaplin early before transitioning to his back where he sunk in the choke. After the fight, UFC President, Dana White compared Nover to a young Georges St. Pierre.
Now in the semi finals, Nover was matched up against George Roop. Nover landed some hard shots early before taking Roop to the mat. Roop reversed Nover but Nover locked up a kimura which he cranked until Roop tapped early in the first round.
Nover moved on to The Ultimate Fighter 8 Finale where he faced off against fellow Team Nogueira member, Efrain Escudero. In a high quality bout, Nover looked dangerous on the feet and on the ground but could not keep the bout in any one position for any length of time as Escudero's wrestling proved too strong. Escudero landed some hard shots along with his dominant positioning and was awarded the fight unanimously by the judges.
UFC
Nover had his post-TUF UFC fight at UFC 98 on May 23, 2009 when he faced Kyle Bradley on the show's undercard. In a controversial bout, Nover was rocked and dropped by Bradley early but looked to have recovered. However, referee, Yves Lavigne called a halt to the bout much to the protest of the crowd, Nover and the UFC commentators.
