Pete "Drago" Sell (born August 5, 1982) is an American professional mixed martial artist and a Brazilian jiu jitsu black belt under former UFC welterweight champion, Matt Serra.

He stands 5 ft. 11 in. tall and fights in the welterweight division (170 lbs.).

He was a semi finalist on The Ultimate Fighter 4: The Comeback and currently fights as a welterweight for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).

MMA Debut and Early Career

Pete Sell made his professional mixed martial arts debut on June 28, 2002 at Vengeance at the Vanderbilt 14 against Rob Biegley. In a fight that lasted one 10 minute round, Sell was awarded the decision victory.

In December of 2002, Sell entered the Ring of Combat organization and defeated Ted Govola by decision in another one round fight.

At Ring of Combat 3, Sell scored an armbar submission victory over Derek Johnson in the first round.

Sell was awared the ROC middleweight title in his next fight when he defeated UFC veteran, Chris Liguori by split decision after three rounds. He defended his title against Liguori in his next fight winning by rear naked choke submission in the third round.

Early UFC Career

In February of 2005, Sell stepped up on short notice to replace Robbie Lawler in a bout against Phil Baroni on the main card of UFC 51. Given little chance of success in the bout, Sell was controlled by Baroni's takedowns for the majority of the three rounds. However in the third, a gassed Baroni left his neck open after Sell faked a Kimura attempt. Sell seized Baroni's neck in a guillotine choke and forced the tap from Baroni at the 4:19 mark of round 3.

Riding high off his successful UFC debut, Sell was matched up against Nate Quarry at the inaugural UFC Fight Night. In a controversial bout, Quarry dropped Sell early and jumped on Sell who had looked to recover from the blow. Referee, Cecil Peoples jumped on top of both fighters claiming the fight was over and awarding Quarry the TKO victory while Sell protested underneath the both of them.

The Ultimate Fighter

Sell returned to Ring of Combat to defend his title again against Landon Showalter which he did by unanimous decision.

In early 2006, Sell was given the oppurtunity to fight on the 4th season of The Ultimate Fighter, The Ultimate Fighter 4: The Comeback. The show was designed to give 16 fighters (8 from middleweight and 8 from welterweight) who had fought in the UFC with little success a chance at redemption with the winner of each weight class awarded a title shot in the division.

Sell accepted the offer and faced off against Charles McCarthy in the opening round of the tournament. Sell defeated McCarthy via unanimous decision to earn himself a spot in the semi finals.

At the semi final stage, Sell asked Dana White and the matchmakers to face Travis Lutter as he had wanted to fight him for a while and he also had wanted his friend and teammate, Patrick Cote to recieve an easier route into the finals. Sell got his wish and was continuosly taken down by Lutter for three rounds until he was on the losing end of a unanimous judge's decision.

Although knocked out of the competition, Sell returned to the Octagon at The Ultimate Fighter 4 Finale where he faced friend, and TUF 4 quarter finalist, Scott Smith. The bout consisted of some furious striking exchanges punctuated by high fives. In the second round, Sell landed a crippling body shot that had Smith recoiling in agony. As Sell charged in to finish the job, Smith landed a vicious right hand that knocked Sell cold. Smith was awarded the knockout victory while still in agony from the body shot.

Post-TUF UFC Career

At UFC 69, Sell faced off against Brazilian, Thales Leites on the show's undercard. Sell was continously taken down by the superior grappler and pounded on for three full rounds. Sell was beaten and battered and lost a clear cut unanimous decision.

A little over five months later, Sell was on the main card of UFC Fight Night 11 in a rematch against Nate Quarry, who was returning from a long lay off due to back surgery. Sell outpointed the rusty Quarry on the feet for the first two rounds. However the third round was a different story as Quarry came alive and knocked Sell cold with a punch 44 seconds into round 3.

On a three fight losing streak, or four if you include the loss to Travis Lutter, Sell took over a year off to rehab some of his injuries. He made his return to UFC competition at UFC 90 to face Josh Burkman having dropped down to the welterweight division. The shift in weight appeared to help Sell as he outpointed Burkman en route to a losing streak snapping unanimous decision victory.

Sell will next take on TUF 7 veteran, Matt Brown at UFC 96.
