Paul "Semtex" Daley (born February 21, 1983) is a British professional mixed martial artist training out of Team Rough House.
He stands 5 ft. 9 in. (176 cm) tall and fights in the welterweight (170 lbs.) division.
Daley was the Cage Rage welterweight champion and is a Strikeforce veteran. He currently fights as a welterweight for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
Early Career
Paul Daley made his professional mixed martial arts debut for the Extreme Brawl promotion on June 29, 2003. He stopped his opponent, John Connelly, with punches in the first round.
Just under a month later, Daley suffered his first professional defeat as his lacking ground game was exposed when he was submitted by Florentim Amorim with a rear naked choke inside the first frame.
Another rear naked choke defeat followed - to James Nicholl - before Daley got back in the win column in February '04 with a :41 TKO stoppage of Lee Doski.
Just over four months later, Daley made his debut for the Cage Rage promotion. It was a quick and successful one as he knocked out Frenchman, Xavier Foupa-Pokam in the first round.
After two more TKO victories - over Paul Jenkins and Jess Liaudin - Daley fought to two successive draws against Abdul Mohammed and Jenkins.
Daley scored a win in his next bout before suffering the third defeat of his career when he was submitted by Pat Healy with a guillotine choke.
He regrouped to close out 2005 with two solid victories improving his record to 8-3-2.
2006 got off to an unfortunate start as a dislocated thumb led to a TKO defeat against Jean Silva in a Cage Rage event to begin the year.
Three decision wins followed before he was submitted by Satoru Kitaoka with a guillotine choke in his Pancrase debut.
After splitting his next two fights in the Cage Rage organization, Daley went an impressive 4-0 in 2007 that included a TKO of K-1 striker, Duane Ludwig in Strikeforce and culminated in Daley taking the Cage Rage welterweight championship with a second round TKO over UFC veteran, Mark Weir.
Fighting for Pro Elite's ShoXC branch to begin 2008, Daley demolished TUF 2 veteran, Sammy Morgan with a concussive elbow strike in 2:12 of round 1.
After the Morgan bout, Daley announced his retirement from professional competition. This retirement lasted all of five months and one week as he returned to action in England, knocking out Slovenian, Bojan Kosednar.
In October, 2008, Daley was given the oppurtunity to face Jake Shields for the EliteXC welterweight championship. Daley dominated the hapless Shields while on the feet but once it was on the ground, it was Shields that began to dominate. Daley defended his way to the end of the first round and began to unleash on a tiring Shields in the second but was taken down again and ultimately submitted with an armbar.
Daley quickly bounced back, stopping UFC and WEC veteran, John Alessio to close out 2008.
Daley faced Nick Thompson to open 2009 and the two fought a close exciting bout that ended with Thompson being awarded a close unanimous decision victory.
In the following two months, Daley scored two knockout victories to hold a record of 21-8-2.
UFC
Shortly after his April victory, Daley was announced to fight Jay Hieron at Affliction Entertainment's third offering, Affliction: Trilogy. However, once the show was cancelled and Affliction began to sponsor UFC events, Daley was signed to a contract with the UFC.
He will make his UFC debut at UFC 103 when he faces fellow UFC newcomer, Brian Foster.
