Pre-UFC

Nate Diaz (born April 16, 1985) is the Caesar Gracie trained younger brother of fighter Nick Diaz. Due to Nate's considerable Brazilian Jiu-jitsu skills, as well as family connections, he was able to make his professional MMA debut fighting in the WEC on October 21, 2004. Winning a contest with Alex Garcia via Triangle Choke.

Next up was a trip to Japan for a battle against Koji Oishi, which Diaz lost by decision. After returning to the United States, Nate faced Tony Juares and won, earning his first TKO victory. Back in the WEC for his next fight Nate scored another TKO, this time over Gil Rael. Following that win with a Triangle Choke on Joe Hurley brought him into WEC title contention.

Diaz won a fourth bout in-a-row, again finishing with a submission, and earned a match with WEC Lightweight Champion, Hermes Franca. Things did not go Nate's way and was submitted for the first, and only, time in his career.

Talkin' TUF

Season 5 of The Ultimate fighter featured exclusively Lightweights,, among them Nate Diaz. Since the season focused solely on a single weight class the tournament was four-tiered. Diaz fought through Rob Emerson, a trash-talking face-off with Karo Parisyan, Corey Hill, and Gray Maynard - winning each fight by submission.

The finale was all set, seeing Diaz pit against Manvel Gamburyan. Gamburyan scored with takedowns int he first round and was likely ahead on the scorecards entering the second frame. Attempting another takedown Manvel was stuffed, and his shoulder collided with the Octagon mat, causing a dislocation. Diaz was awarded a TKO when Gamburyan was unable to rise.

Reppin' the 209

Subsequent to winning TUF 5's highest honor Diaz fought Junior Assuncao, winning by Guillotine Choke. His next opponent, Alvin Robinson, fared no better succumbing to a Diaz Triangle Choke. Nate's next test was highly regarded competitor Kurt Pellegrino. In a victory that will live on in infamy, Diaz secured another Triangle Choke. Sensing that a win was imminent, Diaz held his hands aloft in a show of success. Then gave the entire attending crowd, and a sizable TV audience, a view of his extended middle fingers.

CagePotato Fun Fact: In victory, Nate Diaz has never gone to decision, all nine of his wins come by submission or TKO, as did his exhibition wins on The Ultimate Fighter.
