Early Career
Matt Arroyo made his professional mixed martial arts debut on September 23, 2006 for the Combat Fighting Championship organization. He submitted his opponent, Naeem Munir, with a rear naked choke in 56 seconds.
A month and a half later, Arroyo suffered his first professional defeat when he was stopped with punches by future TUF 7 contestant, Matt Brown.
Arroyo got back on track in February, 2007 when he submitted Reggie Pena with a triangle choke in the first round.
The Ultimate Fighter
Shortly after the Pena victory, Arroyo was picked up as a contestant for The Ultimate Fighter: Team Hughes vs. Team Serra. As a member of Team Serra, Arroyo earned a spot in the quarter finals with a quick rear naked choke submission of Dorian Price in the opening round.
In the quarters, Arroyo met Troy Mandaloniz and submitted the game Hawaiian with an armbar in the first round.
Set to face Mac Danzig in the semis, a rib injury forced Arroyo to pull out of the match thus eliminating him from the competition.
At The Ultimate Fighter 6 Finale, Arroyo faced the guy who replaced him in the semis, John Kolosci. Arroyo looked impressive as he submitted Kolosci with an armbar in the first round.
UFC
Six months later, Arroyo had his second bout for the UFC when he faced Matt Brown in a rematch at The Ultimate Fighter 7 Finale. The fight went much the same as the first encounter with Brown coming out on top via TKO in the second round after battering Arroyo on the ground with hard punches.
Given another bout with the UFC, Arroyo faced another TUF 7 competitor in Dan Cramer on the undercard of UFC 94. Arroyo's record dropped to a disappointing 3-3 after he found himself on the losing end of a split decision.
Following the bout, Arroyo was released from his UFC contract.
