Profile
Mark "The Machine" Hominick (born July 22, 1982) is a Canadian professional mixed martial artist training out of Xtreme Couture.
He stands 5 ft. 8 in. (173 cm) tall and fights in the featherweight division (145 lbs.).
Hominick is a former TKO Featherweight Champion and has fought for the UFC and Affliction. He currently fights as a bantamweight for the World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) organization.
TKO
Mark Hominick made his professional mixed martial arts debut on the back of a highly decorated kickboxing career on June 15, 2002 for the Canadian, UCC promotion (more commonly referred to as TKO Major League MMA). In just his first fight, Hominick was matched against Richard Nancoo for TKO's Featherweight title. Hominick was up to the task though and pulled out a TKO stoppage in the third round to take the title.
Hominick successfully defended his title twice in his following two bouts before heading outside of TKO and Canada to face Stephen Palling in Hawaii's SuperBrawl. Hominick would suffer his first professional defeat when he was stopped on cuts in just 16 seconds.
Hominick attempted to put the disappointment behind him a month later when he faced Mike Thomas Brown but to no avail as he was submitted with a heel hook in the third round.
The losing streak would stretch to three in his next bout as he was knocked cold with a slam in just 18 seconds at an Extreme Challenge event.
Hominick returned to Canada following the third straight loss and got back on track with another successful defense of his title in the form of a second round TKO of Ryan Diaz.
At TKO 15, Hominick knocked off David Guigui with punches to up his record to 5-3, with all his victories coming in TKO.
He would lose his title at TKO 17 when he was choked out by Shane Rice in 1:46 of the first frame, but would regain it four months later when he dispatched Rice with leg kicks at TKO 19.
Hominick successfully defended his regained title two times in 2005 and then opened 2006 with a rear naked choke submission over Naoji Fujimoto to improve his win streak to four.
UFC
Just over a month after defeated Fujimoto, Hominick was matched up against Yves Edwards in a lightweight bout at UFC 58. Hominick got the better of the stand-up, and hurt Edwards with a body shot in the second round. Edwards executed a takedown but Hominick showed his improving ground game by wrapping up Edwards in a triangle choke/armbar combination that forced the tap and secured a very impressive upset win.
Two months after the highest profile victory of his career, Hominick returned to Canada to defend his TKO title. He would not be successful though as he would be choked unconscious by Japanese grappling ace, Hatsu Hioki's triangle choke at the conclusion of the second round.
Hominick returned to the UFC after the loss and faced TUF 2's Jorge Gurgel at UFC Fight Night 5. Hominick would outpoint Gurgel on the feet over three rounds and take out a unanimous decision win.
WEC and Affliction
Back in Canada, Hominck looked to take another march towards regaining his TKO title. He scored a unanimous decision win over Samuel Guillet at TKO 27 and followed that up with a submission win in the Ring of Fire promotion.
Hominick would get his rematch with Hioki at TKO 28 but would not be able to secure victory and was defeated via majority decision after the full five rounds.
After the loss, Hominick decided to stay at featherweight which meant opting for ZUFFA's WEC promotion as opposed to the UFC which did not offer that weight class. He faced Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, Rani Yahya at WEC 28 and was disappointingly submitted with a rear naked choke in just 1:19 of round 1.
Two confidence restoring wins in Canada closed out Hominick's 2007 before making his return to the WEC in early 2008. Hominick met Josh Grispi at WEC 32 and looked to be getting the better of the fight until Grispi caught his back in a scramble and tapped him with a rear naked choke.
Hominick would leave the WEC after the loss, and sign with the upstart Affliction promotion. He faced Savant Young at Affliction: Banned and seemed fairly comfortable in the fight before closing it out with an armbar towards the end of the second round.
At Affliction: Trilogy, Hominick was to face Deividas Taurosevicius but after the event was cancelled, the bout was relocated to the WEC. Hominick will now look to pick up his first WEC victory at WEC 43 against Taurosevicius on the show's undercard.
