The Beginning
A vegan, photographer, naturalist and philosopher, Mac Danzig (born January 2, 1980) is not your typical mixed martial artist. Danzig made his professional debut on October 7, 2001 winning the Extreme Challenge Trials. Less than two weeks later Mac stepped back into the cage on his way to a Omo-Plata submission win over Ray Totorico. After finding success in his next outing, Danzig was invited to fight in the WEC, where he was pit against Kurt Pellegrino. It would be the Cleveland native's first loss, as he dropped a decision to Pellegrino.
The Loss to Pellegrino ushered in a brief rocky period for Danzig's fighting career. Mac won his comeback fight, defeating Tripstin Kersiano with a Rear Naked Choke. Mac's next battle wold see him lose a decision for the second time. Danzig endured and continued to train himself for a face-off with Jason Von Flue, which resulted in a draw.
A New Life
Right around the time of the Von Flue bout, Mac Danzig converted to a vegan lifestyle, which he has adhered to since the switch. Whether or not it could be attributed to the dietary and lifestyle changes or something else, the difference in Danzig's fighting career has been stunning.
Revitalized, Mac went on to won his next twelve fights! In the course of racking up those dozen victories he scored with Rear Naked Chokes against Brandon Olsen, Luke Spencer, Mike Valdez and Frank Kirmse. The victory against Kirmse, at King of the Cage: Shock and Awe, earned Danzig a shot at that promotion's Lightweight title. Less than a month later Mac beat champion Takumi Nakayama by TKO, winning the belt.
Danzig went on to retain the championship in four successful defenses, winning three decisions and TKO'ing Orlando Ruiz. Then for the first time in thirteen bouts and over forty months, Mac was once again defeated, losing his title to Clay French in a close split decision.
The Big Time
Having lost his KotC 155lbtitle, Mac journeyed to champion to face his toughest test - Hayato "Mach" Sakurai. Unfortunately it was a test that Danzig would fail, being stopped for the first and only time in his career. At 4:01 of the second round Hayato Sakurai scored with a tremendous punch, knocking Danzig out cold.
Undaunted Mac worked his way onto season six of The Ultimate Fighter. While on the show he competed as a Welterweight giving up considerable size to the majority of his foes. From the start Danzig was impressive, winning the season's first battle by submitting Brazilian Jiu-jitsu black belt, Joe Scarola, with a Triangle Choke.
The road to finale would feature Mac winning against John Kolosci, twice, with both wins coming by way of first round Rear Naked Choke. With these exhibition wins, Danzig earned a spot in the season finale, where he would face Tommy Speer.
On December, 8, 2007, Danzig made his official UFC debut against Spear in the finale. Can you guess the outcome? If you said "Danzig by Rear Naked Choke" you're a winner, and can successfully spot a trend. Mac continued his R.N.C. spree submitting Mark Bocek at UFC 83.
Danzig is currently scheduled to fight veteran Clay Guida.
