Profile
Lee "Lightning" Murray (born November 12, 1977) is a British and Moroccan professional mixed martial artist who trained out of London Shootfighters.
He stands 6 ft. 2 in. (188 cm) tall and fights in the middleweight division (185 lbs.).
Murray is a UFC and Cage Rage veteran and is currently incarcerated in a Moroccan prison awaiting trial for his alleged involved in the Securitas Depot Robbery of 2006.
Early Career
Lee Murray made his professional mixed martial arts debut on December 5, 1999 for the Millenium Brawl promotion. Murray knocked out Rob Hudson to successfully kick off his career.
Murray kicked off the year 2000 with his first submission win as he scored a first round kimura victory over Mike Tomlinson.
Three months later, Murray entered a one night, four man tournament held by the Extreme Challenge promotion. He ankle locked Chris Albandia to move into the final but would not be able to take the tournament as he would suffer his first professional loss, via armbar submission to future UFC competitor, Joe Doerksen.
A No Contest and a draw followed before Murray got back in the win column with a knockout of Gary Warren. He followed that brutal win up with three wins taking him to the end of 2003. The last of which was a very impressive knockout win over Brazilian legend, Jose "Pele" Landi-Jons.
UFC and Cage Rage
His impressive four fight win streak, coupled with a reported knockout of Tito Ortiz in a street fight after UFC 38 saw Murray handed a contract to compete in the UFC. He made his UFC debut in January, 2004 against Jorge Rivera. Rivera earned an early takedown and looked to work some ground and pound but Murray surprised many as he smoothly worked off his back to lock in a triangle choke/armbar combination that forced the tap and earned him his first UFC win.
After visa issues denied Murray a chance to face Curtis Stout at UFC 48, Murray instead stayed in Britain and challenged PRIDE veteran, Anderson Silva for the vacant Cage Rage middleweight title. Murray gave a good account of himself but was outgunned by Silva and dropped a unanimous decision.
Murray was again lined up to put in his sophomore effort in the UFC at UFC 52 in April, 2005 but visa issues again interfered, nixing a potential slug fest with Canadian, Patrick Cote.
On September 28, 2005, Murray was stabbed in a street fight and was hospitalized. The knife wound punctured his lung and severed an artery. Doctors had to resuscitate him four times during the procedure to save his life.
Arrest
On June 25, 2006, Murray was arrested in Morocco for suspected involved in the Securitas Depot Robbery that took place on February 22, 2006.
Due to there being no treaty between the UK and Morocco, extradition of Murray to the UK proved difficult.
On June 23, 2009, Murray was deemed a Moroccan citizen and was released from jail only to be re-arrested due to a formal request from British Authorities for Murray to face trial for the robbery in Morocco.
