Early Career

Justin McCully made his professional mixed martial arts debut on March 11, 1997 for the Japan based, WARS promotion. He fought to a five round draw with Japanese opponent, Kenji Akiyama.

A little over a year later, McCully made it two draws in a row when he made his Pancrase debut against Daisuke Ishii.

McCully picked up his first professional victory in his next bout when he submitted Martin Emmen with an armbar in a Pancrase event. Later that night, McCully fought Daisuke Ishii to a unanimous decision victory.

A little over three weeks later, McCully suffered his first professional defeat when he fought Evan Tanner at a Pancrase event. Tanner caught him with a kimura five minutes into the fight which McCully refused to tap to resulting in a technical submission loss and a messed up shoulder.

McCully did not return to action for over a year but eventually made his return at a World Vale Tudo Championship event where he submitted Brazilian jiu jitsu black belt, Mario Neto with a kneebar in a little over a minute.

McCully made it win-loss-win-loss in his next bout as he was technically submitted by Mikhail Illoukhine in just under five minutes.

In his next two bouts, McCully made it win-loss-win-loss-win-loss as he submitted and then was submitted by his two opponents.

McCully did not fight for three years following the submission loss but eventually returned and scored a unanimous decision win over Dario Amorim at the inaugural Jungle Fight event in September of 2003.

Another three year break was in order after that victory, with McCully returning in 2006 and picking up two victories over Derek Thornton and Ruben Villareal.

UFC

In 2007, McCully signed to fight with the UFC and made his debut at UFC Fight Night 9. He faced highly touted kickboxer, Antoni Hardonk and used his wrestling advantage to keep Hardonk uncomfortable on his back. McCully was nearly submitted by Hardonk with an armbar but escaped the hold and eventually secured himself a unanimous decision win.

A string of injuries kept McCully out of the cage for over a year, nixing a number of bouts along the way. He eventually returned on the undercard of UFC 86 against former heavyweight title contender, Gabriel Gonzaga. McCully was brutalized on the feet with leg kicks and then taken down and submitted with a kimura in 1:57 of round 1.

McCully fought Eddie Sanchez at UFC: Fight for the Troops in December, 2008 in order to keep his place in the UFC. McCully outpointed Sanchez over the course of the three rounds and even dropped him at the end of the third. The judges returned a unanimous verdict for McCully pushing his record to 9-4-2.

At UFC 102, McCully will face off against rising heavyweight prospect, Junior dos Santos.
