Justin Buchholz (born August 22, 1983) is an American professional mixed martial artist and former Icon Sport lightweight champion.
He stands 6 ft. (183 cm) tall and fights in the lightweight division (155 lbs.).
Buchholz is an EliteXC veteran and currently fights as a lightweight for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
Early Career
Justin Buchholz made his professional mixed martial arts debut on February 16, 2005 for the Alaska Fighting Championship promotion. He submitted his opponent, Andy Garmand, in the first round to kick his career off on a positive note.
Buchholz submitted his next opponent and was awarded a disqualification victory in the bout after that after his opponent, Bo Underwood, landed an illegal kick in the first round.
In April of 2006, Buchholz suffered his first professional defeat when he was stopped midway through the first round by Rodney Rhoden.
Buchholz finished off 2006 with a triangle choke submission over Arto Woods in the first round.
Buchholz signed with Icon Sport in 2007 and made his Icon debut in February, defeating Brandon Piper via TKO in 1:07 of round 1.
At Icon Sport: Epic, Buchholz faced Marshall Harvest for the Icon Sport lightweight championship. Buchholz knocked Harvest cold with a punch just 31 seconds into the bout to claim the title.
Six months later, Buchholz appeared on the undercard of EliteXC: Uprising, defeating Ikaika Choy-Fu via TKO in the first round.
UFC
Buchholz left Pro Elite to sign with the UFC in late 2007. He made his UFC debut at UFC Fight Night 12 against TUF 5's Matt Wiman. Buchholz was a dominated by Wiman, losing via rear naked choke in 2:56 of round 1.
He looked to bounce back from his disappointing debut at UFC 86 in July, 2008. He faced another TUF 5 contestant in Corey Hill. Hill took the first round with his huge reach advantange and damaging striking but in the second a mistake from the inexperienced Hill was capitalized on by Buchholz who seized Hill's back and submitted him with a rear naked choke.
Buchholz will return at UFC 99 when he faces rising British fighter, Terry Etim.
