Profile
Jose "Junior" Aldo (born September 9, 1986) is a Brazilian professional mixed martial artist and Brazilian jiu jitsu black belt.
He stands 5 ft. 7 in. (170 cm) tall and fights in the featherweight division (145 lbs.).
Aldo is a four time Brazilian jiu jitsu champion and a world jiu jitsu champion and currently fights as a featherweight for World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC).
Early Career
Jose Aldo made his professional mixed martial arts debut against an unknown fighter at Eco Fight 1 in Brazil on August 10, 2008. He defeated his opponent via TKO in the first round.
Aldo's next four fights all came in Brazil with "Junior" picking up stoppage victories in all four fights. The last of which came against Anderson Silverio who he defeated via submission due to soccer kicks.
After picking up two first round TKOs in the UK in September and October of 2005, Aldo suffered his first career defeat. He went down via rear naked choke submission to future PRIDE competitor, Luciano Azevedo.
Aldo bounced back from the defeat with a majority decision victory in May of 2006 over Thiago Minu. He followed that up with two more decision victories with the last coming in the Pancrase organization against tough Japanese fighter, Shoji Maruyaama.
WEC Career
In 2008, Aldo signed a contract to fight for the Zuffa controlled, WEC organization. In his debut he faced former Shooto lightweight champion (143 lbs.), Alexandre Franca Nogueira at WEC 34.
Aldo battered his more fancied opponent with strikes that Nogueira simply had no answer for. After a failed takedown in the second round of Nogueira, Aldo pounded him out on the mat to get the stoppage victory at 3:22 of the round.
Five months later, in November of 2008, Aldo faced Jonathan Brookins at WEC 36. Aldo battered Brookins on the feet for the first two rounds and eventually finished him early in the third round with punches.
At WEC 38, Aldo landed a spectacular flying knee knockout over Rolando Perez on the main card. A game Perez was no match for Aldo's varied strikes and was leveled with a knee at the 4:15 mark of the first round.
In a quick turnaround, Aldo returned at WEC 39 just over a month later where he destroyed Chris Mickle on the feet, forcing the stoppage at 1:39 of round 1.
