Jorge "Gamebred" Masvidal (born November 12, 1984) is a Cuban and American professional mixed martial artist who trains out of American Top Team in Miami, Florida.
He stands 5 ft. 10 in. (178 cm) tall and fights in the lightweight division (155 lbs.).
Masvidal is a veteran of the Bodog Fight, Strikeforce and Sengoku promotions and currently fights as a lightweight for the Bellator Fighting Championships (BFC).
Early Career
Jorge Masvidal made his professional mixed martial arts debut against Brandon Bledsoe at a HOOKnSHOOT event on May 24, 2003. Masvidal KO'd Bledsoe in the first round with punches to kick off his career.
Gamebred's next two fights were victories over future TUF competitors. He scored a unanimous decision over Brian Geraghty (TUF 5) and stopped Rolando Delgado (TUF 8) in the second round.
After rolling off two more victories in the Absolute Fighting Championships promotion, Masvidal suffered his first professional defeat when he was on the losing end of a unanimous decision to Rafael Assuncao at a Full Throttle event on April 21, 2005.
Just nine days later, Masvidal rebounded from the loss as he impressively disposed of future UFC competitor, Joe Lauzon via TKO in the second round.
Masvidal went down again, three months later, when he was submitted by Paul Rodriguez with a rear naked choke at Absolute Fighting Championships 13.
Gamebred began 2006 with a TKO over David Gardner in February which he followed up with a unanimous decision over Nuri Shakir four months later.
In August of 2006, Masvidal entered the ill fated Bodog Fight organization. At Bodog Fight: To the Brink of War, Masvidal defeated Keith Wisniewski via majority decision after three rounds.
Masvidal finished off 2006 with a unanimous decision win over UFC veteran, Steve Berger at Bodog Fight: Clash of the Nations.
In July of 2007, Masvidal picked up the most impressive victory of his career to date as he knocked former top UFC lightweight contender, Yves Edwards cold with a head kick at Bodog Fight: Alvarez vs. Lee.
Strikeforce and Sengoku
Masvidal left Bodog after the Edwards victory and entered the Strikeforce promotion. He made his Strikeforce debut at their first playboy mansion show on September 29, 2007. He faced and defeated opponent, Matt Lee via TKO (elbows and punches) at 1:33 of round 1.
After picking up a 56 second TKO victory outside of the promotion in December, Masvidal returned to Strikeforce at their first show in Washington, Strikeforce: Strikeforce At The Dome. Masvidal defeated opponent, Ryan Healy via unanimous decision to push his overall record to 14-2 and his win streak to eight.
In June of 2008, Masvidal headed over to Japan to compete for World Victory Road's Sengoku promotion at Sengoku: Third Battle. He faced Brazilian jiu jitsu black belt, Rodrigo Damm and was stopped on punches for the first time in his career in the second round to snap his winning streak.
He bounced back from the loss three months later when he stopped former IFL lightweight champion, Ryan Schultz with punches 1:57 into round 1 at Sengoku: Fifth Battle.
In his last fight of 2008, Masvidal made it three wins in a row when he fought to a unanimous decision victory over tough Korean fighter, Seung Hwan Bang at Sengoku: Sixth Battle.
Bellator Fighting Championships
In 2009, Masvidal signed with upstart promotion, Bellator Fighting Championships. At BFC 1 Masvidal faced off against Nick Agallar in the opening round of Bellator's 8-man lightweight tournament. He stopped Agallar with punches at 1:19 of round 1.
In the semi-final stage to be held at BFC 5 on May 1, 2009, Masvidal will face WEC veteran, Toby Imada.
