Profile

Jon "Bones" Jones (born July 19, 1987) is an American professional mixed martial artist and trains out of Team BombSquad in Cortland, New York.

He stands 6 ft. 4 in. tall and fights in the light heavyweight division for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).

Early MMA Career

Jon Jones made his professional mixed martial arts debut on April 12, 2008 against Brad Bernard at a Full Force Productions event. He defeated Bernard via TKO 1:32 into the first round.

Seven days later, Jones returned to the cage to face Carlos Eduardo at a Battle Cage Xtreme event where he KO'd his opponent, 24 seconds into the third round.

Jones's third fight was an even quicker turn around as he returned to action just six days after the Eduardo victory. He wasted little time in notching up his third win when he tapped Anthony Pina with a guillotine choke just 1:15 into the first round.

Taking a relatively long time off between his third and fourth fights, Jones returned to the cage two weeks later against Ryan Verrett. Another quick TKO was on the cards as he once again halted his opponent in the first round.

A little over a month later, he knocked out Parker Porter in 36 seconds before scoring a TKO over Moyses Gabin just three weeks after that.

UFC Career

On three weeks notice, Jon Jones accepted his 7th fight of 2008 and his first fight for the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Jones, a replacement for the injured Tomasz Drwal, was matched up against IFL veteran and light heavyweight prospect, Andre Gusmao on UFC 87's undercard.

Jones surprised many with his explosive takedowns and unorthodox striking that had Gusmao on the back foot for the entire fight. At the end of third, Jones, a substantial underdog, was awarded the unanimous decision victory.

After the longest wait he had had between fights (5 months), Jones returned to the UFC octagon for the biggest fight of his career on arguably the biggest card of 2009. Jones faced TUF 1 finalist, Stephan Bonnar on the main card. Considered a considerable underdog once again, Jones left mouthes agape with some highlight reel Greco Roman throws and the unconvential, yet effective striking game he had shown in the Gusmao fight. Jones even managed to drop Bonnar with a spinning elbow in the second round. After three rounds, Jones was awarded the unanimous decision victory.
