Jason "Mayhem" Miller (born December 24, 1980) is an American professional mixed martial artist and former Icon Sport middleweight champion.
He stands 6 ft. 1 in. (185 cm) tall and fights in the middleweight division (185 lbs.).
Miller has fought for a number of recognizable promotions such as the UFC, WEC, Icon Sport and DREAM. He currently fights as a middleweight contender for the DREAM organization.
Mayhem also currently hosts MTV's Bully Beatdown.
Early Career
Jason Miller made his professional mixed martial arts debut against Tommy Laguwans at a Rage in the Cage event on April 28, 2001. He defeated Laguwans via TKO at 3:00 of round 1.
Mayhem fought twice more in 2001, submitting Brian Warren and Todd Carney in the first and second round respectively.
Miller began 2002 with his first professional defeat as he went down via decision to Chael Sonnen after two rounds.
He scored two victories in his next two fights before dropping his second fight in a rematch with Todd Carney. Just over a minute in, Miller was caught in a guillotine choke and forced to submit.
Miller immediately rematched Carney in February of 2003 and stopped him on cuts in two and a half minutes of the first round.
Three weeks later Miller entered a one night 8-man tournament held by the Extreme Challenge promotion. He faced future PRIDE and UFC competitor, Denis Kang in the opening round and submitted him with a rear naked choke.
A little later that night, Miller was knocked out of the tournament when he was on the losing end of a decision to eventual tournament winner, Tim Kennedy.
UFC and Icon Sport
In June of 2003, Mayhem entered the Hawaii based SuperBrawl promotion which would later be known as Icon Sport. In his SuperBrawl debut he defeated Jay Buck via split decision after three rounds.
After racking up two more victories, Miller faced PRIDE veteran and premiere Hawaiian fighter, Egan Inoue at SuperBrawl 32 on December 5, 2003. Miller embraced the role of "the heel" and went on to dominate the bout winning via corner stoppage after two rounds.
Ten months later, Miller faced off against Hawaiian UFC veteran, Ronald Jhun at SuperBrawl 37. Mayhem choked Jhun unconscious with an arm triangle choke in the second round. This caused a riot from the Hawaiian fans and during that riot Miller was punched in the back of the head by Hawaiian, Mark Moreno.
With a 12-3 record which featured quality wins over tough opponents, Miller earned a call-up to the UFC. In his debut he faced Georges St. Pierre on the main card of UFC 52. In a spirited battle, Mayhem hung in as St. Pierre battered him for three rounds. The judges' scorecards came back as a clear cut unanimous decision for GSP.
Miller left the UFC to return to SuperBrawl/Icon to face Mark Moreno in a grudge match after the incident at SuperBrawl 37. Mayhem dominated the bout after taking Moreno to the ground early. With just under 10 seconds left in the first round, Mayhem got into position for an armbar from mount, gave a shaka to the audience and then finished the armbar to take the victory.
After submitting UFC veteran, Falaniko Vitale in October of 2005 at Icon Sport: Opposites Attract, Mayhem headlined Icon Sport: Mayhem vs. Giant on May 26, 2006. He faced 6 ft. 7 in. and 327 lbs. Stefan Gamlin in the main event and submitted him with an arm triangle choke in just 46 seconds.
Just under two months later, Miller submitted TUF 1's Lodune Sincaid with a rear naked choke as part of ill fated World Fighting Alliance's inaugural event, WFA: King of the Streets on July 22, 2006.
In September, Mayhem faced off against UFC veteran, Robbie Lawler for the Icon Sport middleweight title at Icon Sport: Mayhem vs. Lawler. Considered the underdog pre-fight, Mayhem surprised many as he wore down Lawler before tapping him with an arm triangle choke in the third round.
Mayhem's title reign was short as he was defeated in his next bout in December as he was stopped by soccer kicks and punches by former UFC welterweight title challenger, Frank Trigg.
Miller finished his tenure in the Icon Sport promotion with a 1:11 TKO drubbing of Hector Urbina at Icon Sport: Epic.
DREAM
After leaving Icon, Mayhem signed with the World Extreme Cagefighting organization that had recently been bought out by ZUFFA. Miller made his WEC debut at WEC 27, defeated Hiromitsu Miura via unanimous decision after three rounds.
Shortly after his debut he parted company with the WEC citing a desire to fight in front of larger audiences. Mayhem then signed a three fight non-exclusive deal with Mark Cuban's HDNet Fights. He had his lone fight for HDNet Fights at their second event on December 15, 2007. He defeated Tim Kennedy via unanimous decision in a rematch of their bout from February of 2003.
Rumors abounded that he would face off against Frank Trigg in a rematch under the HDNet Fights banner. That fight did not materialize however and Miller instead signed to fight for the Japan based, DREAM organization.
He entered DREAM's 2008 Middleweight Grand Prix at DREAM 3 where he faced Katsuyori Shibata in the opening round. After playing up to the crowd for the first six and a half minutes, Miller eventually finished Shibata with punches at the 6:57 mark.
Just over a month later, Mayhem faced Brazilian jiu jitsu wizard, Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza in the quarter finals at DREAM 4. Miller decided not to avoid going to the ground in the bout and that proved to be a mistake as he was dominated positionally while the fight was on the mat. Although he won the stand-up exchanges, the fight ultimately went to Jacare via unanimous decision, knocking Miller out of the tournament.
In October of 2008, Miller announced his retirement from MMA citing that: "Yeah, yeah! I got plenty of money. I don't even care. I just do it for fun. I love fighting, but I'm just doing it for fun. I don't feel like doing it right now so I'm not going to do it. I might come out of retirement in a little while, but right now, I'm retired. I don't care. There is no need. There is no need for me to fight so I'm just happy to have lived such a fun career inside of MMA so if it ends now, it was fun."
Mayhem returned to public consciousness in early 2009 however as he was announced as the host for MTV's Bully Beatdown. Shortly after the show began airing, Miller announced his comeback to fighting. In his return bout on April 18, he submitted Hawaiian, Kala Hose for the Hawaii based, Kingdom MMA promotion.
Miller will return to the DREAM promotion for his next bout when he faces Ronaldo Souza in a rematch for the vacant DREAM middleweight title at DREAM 9.
